Joe Gaiter: What does football mean to you?
Cameron Brown: Football means a lot to me. I started playing football at the age of five. Ever since that time, I had a love for the sport and would strive every year to be the best. The player who inspired me at a young age was Ray Lewis.
Joe Gaiter: Tell us about your season this year?
Cameron Brown:This season didn’t go as we wanted it. We were in the position to win alot of games but we couldn’t come together and finish as a team. For me personally, I think I had a decent season this year. I was a nominee for FCS Defensive HERO of the week and MEAC Fans’ Play of the Week. I had 39 Tackles,6.5 TFL, 2 Sacks, 2 FR, 2 FF, 2pt Conversion TD, and 1 Int td for 30 yards. Both the team and I as an individual have a lot of improvement to do for next season.
Joe Gaiter: How do you feel about Savannah State?
Cameron Brown: So far, Savannah State has been a good fit for me. Academically, I like how I can establish a relationship with my teachers. We have great coaches here. They are like family. They genuinely care for each player and make sure athletes take care of their business on the field and off the field. I feel welcomed and loved.
Joe Gaiter: What challenges did you face on and off the field?
Cameron Brown: It was a challenge academically in the beginning to balance school and football. I came to Savannah State as a PWO and was able to earn a full scholarship in Week one. Not only that but I was a starter my whole freshman year. I can say it was because of blessings from God and because of my hard work on and off the field.
Joe Gaiter: Is it hard being a student athlete?
Cameron Brown: It’s very difficult being a student athlete. From waking up early mornings, lifting weights, going to meetings throughout the day, practicing, going to study hall, and going to class. Being a student athlete says a lot about you. It’s really a job and you have to be determine and responsible.
Joe Gaiter: What has been your impact on your team this year?
Cameron Brown:Making big plays when they were needed and encouraging my teammates to take care of there business on and off the field.
Joe Gaiter: What have you learned from the graduating seniors?
Cameron Brown:They taught me to take advantage of every opportunity you get. Also that education is important because you can’t play football for forever and will need something to fall back on.
Joe Gaiter: What are your strengths and things you want to improve on athletically?
Cameron Brown: My strengths are being a team player and someone you can always depend and rely on. Things I want to improve on is becoming faster, stronger, and becoming better with my technique.
Joe Gaiter: Do you feel you made the right decision to go to Savannah State?
CameronBrown: Yes, I feel like I made the right decision. I wanted to go to somewhere and change the culture and I believe Savannah was the place to do so.
Joe Gaiter: How can your team start winning more next year?
Cameron Brown: Everybody coming together as one and doing their job. Also taking care of their business both on and off the field. Being accountable.
Joe Gaiter: Do you have any pregame rituals?
Cameron Brown: I always have to be listening to music. Also, going on the field and getting a feel for it.
Joe Gaiter: What are your fondest memories at Walnut Grove HS?
Cameron Brown: Hanging out with my classmates and teammates that I have known all my life. Also, having great coaches and teachers to be around.
Joe Gaiter: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Cameron Brown: A college graduate and being very successful in life. Hopefully in the NFL if the opportunity presents itself.
Joe Gaiter: What inspires you to keep pushing towards your goal?
Cameron Brown: Seeing my mother graduate with multiple advanced degrees and seeing people from my hometown make it.
Joe Gaiter: Final Words/Shoutouts?
Cameron Brown: First, I want to thank God for continuing to bless me, without him nothing’s possible. I want to give a shout out to my family, my friends, my church, and teammates for always supporting me. Also, a shoutout to my hometown Monroe “MonkeyTown” Ga. Go checkout Rags2Riches music group.
