Keon Wheeler: Football is my life. The game taught me a lot in life, that’s why I love it so much and it made me the man I am today. Without football I don’t know what I would be doing.
Joe Gaiter: What is the story of your life?
Keon Wheeler: Just know that I’ve been through a lot and I over came some many obstacles in order to be in the position that I’m in today and I would like to thank my mom and my family for that
Joe Gaiter: Why did you pick Miles College?
Keon Wheeler: I was at Paine College at first. I didn’t play my freshman year because I was ineligible but by the time spring ball came around the program had shut down. I called one of homeboys and he told me that Miles was having a try out so I went and I made the team. By the spring I earned a scholarship.
Joe Gaiter: What were your stats this year?
Keon Wheeler: 16 tackles, 1 tackles for a loss and 2 PBU. I was more like the nickel guy, so I really didn’t see as much playing time like I should’ve but oh well.
Joe Gaiter: How did it feel to win the SIAC Championship this year?
Keon Wheeler: Man, I can’t even describe the feeling. Starting 0-5 and to turn it all around to win a championship was special. Those 4am practices paid off.#SizeMeUp
Joe Gaiter: How have you dealt with adversity this season?
Keon Wheeler: Yes, I dealt with a lot of adversity this year. From being frustrated from not getting much playing time and you know what you capable of doing on the field and to see that the coaches really didn’t see it in me really was frustrating to me. I just prayed about the situation and put it all in god hands.
Joe Gaiter: What are keys in playing a good corner/safety?
Keon Wheeler: The key to being a great corner is that you have to be patient. Don’t always react to the first move a receiver give you, cause if you guess on that first move trust me he hitting you with something else right behind it. Also you have to study your opponent. Learn his tendencies, know where he lines up at. Knowing where a receiver lines up at tell you where he’s going, know what type of releases he like to do on the line.
Joe Gaiter: What will you miss about Miles College?
Keon Wheeler: I’ll miss my DBU family. I was the oldest out the crew so I look at them like the little brothers I never had. Oh yea and my favorite professor Dr. White coolest professor at Miles.
Joe Gaiter: What goes through your mind when you watch your old film from Douglas HS?
Keon Wheeler: Lol when I think about my film from Doug, I just laugh now because I thought I was good but now I look at it like man I was trash.
Joe Gaiter: Will you be entering into the NFL Draft?
Keon Wheeler: No, but I have something else in mind.
Joe Gaiter: Where do you see yourself a year from now?
Keon Wheeler: If I’m not on somebody team. I see myself owning my own business one day or being a trainer for high school and college football players.
Joe Gaiter: What do you want your legacy to be?
Keon Wheeler: I just wanna make a name for the wheeler family.
Joe Gaiter: What is your untold story?
Keon Wheeler: I wouldn’t be in school or playing ball if it wasn’t for my cousin Jerry. My cousin was murdered in 2013 and before then I had my mind made up that I wasn’t going to school. I was gone just stay home and help my mom out. The night I got the phone call, I just knew I had to distance myself from friends and go off to school because it wasn’t nothing else for me in Atlanta but trouble.
Joe Gaiter: Are you happy?
Keon Wheeler: Of course I’m always happy.
Joe Gaiter: Do you have any regrets?
Keon Wheeler: None at all.
