DJ Olmstead: Football means everything to me. It has taught me so much about myself and life throughout my years of playing.
Joe Gaiter: Tell me about your season this year?
DJ Olmstead: This year I finished with 59 tackles, 6 INT, 3 FF, 4FR and 3 TDs; helping lead my team to a Heart of Texas Bowl victory. I earned All American honors from D2Football.com, HeroSports.com Fan Choice D2 DPOY, 1st Team All Conference, 1st Team All Region and recorded a single season school record for Interceptions returned for Touchdowns. I was also voted Team Captain, Most Outstanding Defensive Back and Overall Team MVP by my teammates and coaches.
Joe Gaiter: How hungry are you to make the NFL?
DJ Olmstead: I want this opportunity more than anything else in life. Making it to the NFL is my ultimate life goal and has been my dream ever since I can remember.
Joe Gaiter: What will you miss most about playing college ball?
DJ Olmstead: Going through the struggle with my brothers.
Joe Gaiter: What would you tell yourself if you could go back to your freshman year?
DJ Olmstead: Keep your head up through all the bad times. Everything happens for a reason and you have to trust the process even when it seems like things don’t make sense.
Joe Gaiter: What is your motivation on the field?
DJ Olmstead: My motivation is to overall put myself and my family in a better situation.
Joe Gaiter: Have you reached your athletic peak?
DJ Olmstead: Not at all. I am bettering myself every single day.
Joe Gaiter: What are the keys in playing your position?
DJ Olmstead: Mental toughness: playing DB is one of the hardest positions on the football field and you must have a short memory in order to be successful. Confidence: trusting yourself and believing you can make plays and compete with some of the most athletic guys on the field.
Joe Gaiter: Do you have a backup if you don’t get drafted?
DJ Olmstead: I have confidence I will get picked up by a team who wants me, whether that be through the draft or free agency.
Joe Gaiter: Who is your agent and why did you chose them?
DJ Olmstead: Gary Glick of Synergy Sports. He has a ton of connections and experience in the business. He has confidence and belief in me reaching the NFL.
Joe Gaiter: When is your proday?
DJ Olmstead: March 16th @ Pitt St University
Joe Gaiter: Where and how often are you training?
DJ Olmstead: I train 6 times a week at Engard Athletics in Tempe, Arizona.
Joe Gaiter: What do you want your legacy to be?
DJ Olmstead: You can achieve anything in life through hard work and dedication. Work your hardest for the things you want the most, especially when times get tough. If you start something, don’t stop until you finish it. Surprise yourself by how hard you can work and how much you can accomplish when you put your mind to it.
Joe Gaiter: Final Words/Shoutouts?
DJ Olmstead: Just trust the process and be the best you can be day in and day out. Shoutout to my family (close and extended), my friends who are like family, my girlfriend and my trainer Kate Engard. I’ve been through a lot and have an interesting path that led me to where I’m at today. The love, support and motivation from everyone keeps me going through the good and bad days.
