Serron Spann: Basketball is more than just a game to me. Basketball was always a spiritual release for me. I enjoy playing the game. I love the competition, the grind, and the overall adrenaline rush that you get from the impact of the game. Basketball is not just a platform, but it is a way for me to inspire and connect with other individuals from all over the world.
Joe Gaiter: Where did you grow up and how was your childhood?
Serron Spann: I grew up in Sumter, SC, which is known for being more of one of the rougher areas of South Carolina. I grew up around most family and friends that did their best job of ensuring that I would be the best young man that I can possibly be. I am the oldest of three kids and have always been pushed to be one of the leaders of my family.
Joe Gaiter: Who inspired you to play sports growing up?
Serron Spann: Growing up I was inspired to play sports by my entire family. I grew up in a family full of athletes on both sides. The main influences were my uncles, cousins, and friends that I had growing up. Every day was pretty much a competition, and they wanted to always push me to be better whether it was in the classroom, on the court, or just simply having the tools that I needed to be equipped for the steps of life. I was also very inspired by Tee Morant, Ethan Myers, and the entire Carolina Ravens Organization. Being around such family of individuals who have the drive to see young men succeed in life gave me all the drive I needed.
Joe Gaiter: What are your fondest memories about Evans High School?
Serron Spann: My fondest memories of going to Evans Highschool was my very first varsity basketball that that really opened the doors and lead to me leading and competing with some of the best teams that Evans High School has had. I always enjoyed the very energetic fans and crowds at every basketball game. I really enjoyed the graduating class of 2018 that I graduated with. Highschool was literally a movie!
Joe Gaiter: How did it feel to receive Marine Corps Most Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year Award, CSRA Georgia Basketball All-Star award and other acknowledgements in high school?
Serron Spann: Receiving those awards was a very humbling experience and also an honor. It made all the hard work that the influences in my life instilled feel very worth it. I was always considered under the radar so seeing those accomplishments felt good.
Joe Gaiter: Tell us about your recruitment experience?
Serron Spann: My recruitment experience was definitely a challenge. I learned many things about the recruitment process that I will be able to teach the ones coming behind me. I received offers from D2 and NAIA schools late going into my senior year of high school. The whole process was a grind in itself.
Joe Gaiter: Why did you choose Brewton-Parker College?
Serron Spann: I chose Brewton-Parker because they welcomed me in and made me feel as if was home with family. There I was challenged being in a different environment and held to extremely high standards that made me into a quality student-athlete.
Joe Gaiter: Describe yourself as a guard on the court.
Serron Spann: If I were to describe myself on the court, I would describe myself as a smooth, skilled, all-around player. I try to focus on being pretty solid in all areas of the game, but there are some parts that stand out more than others.
Joe Gaiter: The Barons went 7-23 last year, what went wrong?
Serron Spann: We went through the season with having brand new players and a new coaching staff. I believe that everyone was just trying to find themselves and their role in the program to try and make things work.
Joe Gaiter: How did you face adversity?
Serron Spann: I faced adversity with having to change my entire body to adapt to the college game and become prepared every night to compete. I faced the adversity of attending one of the tougher level academic schools. Both of those together have prepared me to be the student-athlete that I need to be.
Joe Gaiter: Where are you training during the off-season?
Serron Spann: During the off season I am training at Thomas Athletics/Planet Fitness with my trainer at Corsica Thomas. She is one of the tougher athletic trainers in the area and embarking on a journey with her so far has been great.
Joe Gaiter: What is your major and how do you plan on using it?
Serron Spann: My major is in the study of Business Administration with a concentration in the area of Marketing. Some day I look forward to becoming a professional basketball player and using that experience to build my own marketing firm.
Joe Gaiter: Tell us about HeatCheck.
Serron Spann: Heatcheck is actually a business that me and one of my fellow athlete friends decided to collaborate on for a project in the sneaker community. In the future, we look forward to hosting a shoe charity event in the area of Sumter, SC. We both are aware of the population of individuals in need, and the lack of funding in certain areas of the city, so we would like aim to prepare an event that would bring communities from everywhere together for a greater cause.
Joe Gaiter: What is your untold story?
Serron Spann: As far as my untold story, most do not know that I was born on Halloween at 12:01 with man difficulties and struggled to stay alive. Thanks to the hands of God and his blessings I try to live my life to love and inspire many individuals by making at least ten people smile a day.
Joe Gaiter: Who are some athletes we should keep on our radar?
Serron Spann: Athletes that should stay on your radar would be my guy Ja Morant who has always been a gem in the making. More SC athletes like Khalil Robinson, Alex Caldwell, Naseem Khaalid, Nazir Andino, Quentin Hodge, CJ Felder, Jamal Walton, Jourdain Spann, Tyana Saunders, and myself. You also have your GA athletes like Christian Chambers, Tre Gomillion, Mardrez McBride, Kalen Williams, Corey Watkins, Jack Gray, John Allen, RJ Selman, Tyreke Williams, and Rj Selman. All of these individuals have been great influences as athletes and friends and will soon put the world on notice.

Serron Spann: I would like for my legacy to be that I impacted as many lives in the most influential way that I could every single day. I take pride in being more than just an athlete. In times like now we all have to unite as leaders and bring one another together.
Joe Gaiter: Final Words?
Serron Spann: I would like to thank God for what he does for my life, and much love to everyone out there!
Joe Gaiter: Shout outs?
Serron Spann: Shoutout to my mother for being the biggest influence and supporter in my life. She has and will always be my first encounter with a real-life superhero.
