Joe Gaiter: Wow, what a game. What are your overall thoughts about that crazy game your team played against Benedict College?
Tyrius Walker: Words can’t even explain the feeling I felt that game , I’m proud of my teammates and we fought hard till the end and never gave up. We know it’s a target on our back and we defeated the challenge.
Joe Gaiter: Tell me the importance of Free Throws in that game.
Tyrius Walker: Free throws are very important if you want to win a championship. Coach preaches defense and free throws.
Joe Gaiter: When the game went into overtime, you took charge after Benedict scored in the first 3 plays. Did you feel like that was your only option at that point?
Tyrius Walker: I was shocked seeing the fans run out on the court after I scored because it was 6 seconds left so I was kind of hurt knowing they hit us with a technical foul but then once he hit the free throw to tie it up I knew I still had a chance to put my team up by 1 with a free throw so I just stayed calm and did what god put me in this situation to do.
Joe Gaiter: Ofcourse , my teammates trusted me after they went on their run and told me to bring us home so I felt like I couldn’t let my guys down. So I just thank my teammates for believing in me.
Tyrius Walker: Tell me about the last few seconds of the game. You scored, got fouled, fans ran on the court almost getting in fights with a Benedict player. They hit a technical foul shot to tie the game and it all comes down to you.
Joe Gaiter: Did you ever feel like the game was over when Benedict was up 6 points in OT?
Tyrius Walker: Not at all because I had faith in my team. I just thank Coach Brewer and Whit for putting us in these type of situations in practice so it wasn’t new to us.
Joe Gaiter: 47 points that is pretty impressive.
Tyrius Walker: Yeahhh , that’s all because of my teammates though.
Joe Gaiter: After the game, what did the coach tell the team in the locker room?
Tyrius Walker: He walked in and said “Not Today” and basically today wasn’t the day we was going to let a team come in our house and beat us.
Joe Gaiter: What mistakes did your team make that game?
Tyrius Walker: Just was having defensive breakdowns and rushing our offense and taking a couple bad shots but nothing we can’t solve in practice.
Joe Gaiter: What have you learned about Benedict’s team that will help you when you play this team on February 5th?
Tyrius Walker: Just making sure we play better perimeter defense and not allow their guards to get comfortable with setting up their offense but they are pretty good so we just have to lock in and stay fundamentally sound on both ends of the floor.
Joe Gaiter: Final Words
Tyrius Walker: Just proud to see my teammates getting the recognition we deserve and I told them as long as we keep winning, they will wake up and they see how fast they woke up to see history.
