Shawn Foxbrennen: Basketball means so much to me it represents my blood, sweat, tears, passion and my committed efforts. Basketball has made me sacrifice the importance of being the best man, leader and role model to myself and many other. Basketball has helped me to be able to network with many different people and explore the world to see unique things I’ve never thought of encountering.
Joe Gaiter: Where did you grow up and how was your childhood?
Shawn Foxbrennen: I grew up in Opa Locka, FL but I am originally from Miami Gardens, FL. My childhood was rough growing up things were never easy for me. I had to catch up on things quickly with my mom being a single parent and father being in and out of my life things weren’t consistent for me. My Mother had to play both roles as a parent which made things a little difficult at times in my life.
Joe Gaiter: Who were your role models growing up?
Shawn Foxbrennen: My Role Models in my life is my grandfather and my uncle who passed away before I was born a lot of my talent and athleticism came from them and if my uncle was here today he would be so proud of the man I’ve have become.
Joe Gaiter: What are your fondest memories at Fayette County High School?
Shawn Foxbrennen: My Fondest memory at Fayette County High for the two years I attended had to be when we played Westlake and our rival Sandy Creek those games were TOUGH! The crowd was insane the atmosphere was phenomenal and the stands were packed.
Joe Gaiter: Why did you choose Fort Valley State to further your academic and sports career?
Shawn Foxbrennen: I chose Fort Valley State University to further my academics and sports career because they took a chance on me coming from my last school I didn’t really see eye to eye with my coach. Going into my junior year of college a lot of the other schools passed up on me because of the reputation I had at the recent school I attended. FVSU gave me a second chance to take advantage of my opportunity. I also chose FVSU because of the tradition the school brings. I had a great visit the staff welcomed me with open arms and It wasn’t so far from home to see my family from time to time. I fell in love with the Campus especially the GYM! FVSU is very family oriented and I always wanted to be apart of an HBCU.
Joe Gaiter: How would you describe your style on the court?
Shawn Foxbrennen: I would describe my style on the court as a player that brings energy towards his team. I’m very offensive minded very aggressive and willing to do anything to help my team win. I’m very active on the boards and can shoot from anywhere on the floor has a soft touch and plays with Fire and aggression willing to play DEFENSE and guard any position if necessary.
Joe Gaiter: What is your ultimate goal?
Shawn Foxbrennen: My ultimate goal to is to become PLAYER OF THE YEAR and FIRST TEAM ALL CONFERENCE and Average 18ppg 10rpg and win the SIAC Tournament to compete in the Nationals
Joe Gaiter: How do you face adversity on your team?
Shawn Foxbrennen: I faced adversity by staying composed and just trying to make the right play to give my team some momentum. I try to never let the score or the other team to determine how I perform so I always stay true to myself and do what I know I am best at. I never try to put myself in an uncomfortable situation. I treat adversity as if it was a game of Chess.
Joe Gaiter: You are averaging 15.3 points this year. Are you satisfied with your efforts?
Shawn Foxbrennen: I am not satisfied with my efforts because my PPG average could be a lot higher and I should be playing with a lot more professionalism. In this game of basketball it’s about whose winning. Going into 2020 will be a different outcome it will get better and things will be solved differently. I always have the mindset of not getting complacent staying humble and stay true to the work I’ve put in since the summer I always know that there is always room for improvement and to continue to take constructive criticism.
Joe Gaiter: What motivates you on the court?
Shawn Foxbrennen: What motivates me on the court is having the impact of being a public figure not only to my family but to the ones who truly look up to me and being the one to provide for my family especially my mother and grandfather they give me hope because I’ve watched how hard they had to work to provide for the family so I just want to do it in return. Where I came from and my family is what motivates me on the court.
Joe Gaiter: Any pregame rituals?
Shawn Foxbrennen: My pregame ritual is to first call my auntie or any other family members back at home and ask them for their prayers before I play then to call my mentor and to chat with him about the mindset and the attitude I need to have when I step on the court and then listen to my playlist and get ready to perform
Joe Gaiter: What makes you happy?
Shawn Foxbrennen: What makes me happy is seeing everybody else happy and just playing the sport that I love and actually putting in the work and seeing the results the results pay off.
Joe Gaiter: Any games you are really looking forward in playing this year?
Shawn Foxbrennen: The game I am most looking forward to is the Albany state game at home we play them on our homecoming night! That’s a classic and that’s a big rival when it comes to the HBCU Sports. I love the atmosphere and the crowd really come out and support on both sides. They beat us last year and we beat them so it’s going to be one to remember.
Joe Gaiter: Final Words?
Shawn Foxbrennen: My final words is to stayed tuned for the 2020 season because My Team and I are underdogs right now but we will make a difference. It’s not about how you start but it’s about how you finish.
